We're excited to announce that we've upgraded our Speed Map tool to provide punters with even more insights into each race.

Speed maps are one of the most critical tools in the punting caper and this overhaul was designed to address all facets of pace in a race.

Previously we focused just on settling positions, but this revamp allows us to break down each race into three key maps: Barrier Speed, Settling Position and Closing Speed.

NOTE: To access the tool make sure you've downloaded the newest app update (Version: 4.4.4)

NEW FEATURES

Race Pace

One of the key upgrades is the emphasis on tempo, a factor which plays a big role in determining the eventual winner.

Anticipating this is critical and we've made it easy for you by assigning a pace - slow, moderate or fast - based on historical data from competitors.

Barrier Speed

Barrier Speed highlights how fast (or slow) each horse is once the gates fly open.

Horses with a lot of pace will typically settle nearer to the front, whereas slower beginners often find themselves worse than midfield or out the back.

Each horse is nor colour coded according to their early speed -  backmarkers (gold), midfield (grey), on pace (green) and first starters (lilac).

Settling Position

This is all about where horses will end up in the run once they've sorted their order out after jumping. - whether that be up front, midfield or out the back.

It basically charts where each runner is likely to settle based on a number of factors, including their Barrier Speed and where they've positioned themselves in previous starts, with emphasis placed on recent runs.

Closing Speed

The last map is Closing Speed, which highlights how strong each horse is likely to be at the end of the race based on the assigned tempo and their individual sectional data from previous races.

Horses that have to work hard early in the race will usually be weaker late, whereas those that conserve their energy will often hit the line hard and show strong closing speed.

Directional Change

Existing users might notice the change in direction. Previously we displayed clockwise races as right to left and anti-clockwise races as left to right.

Given settling positions and barrier speed are determined at the outset of a race, we thought it made more sense for our maps to reflect the direction horses set out in at the corresponding jurisdiction.

Obviously straight races and certain start points mean there is no 100% right way but we feel this more accurately reflects the start direction for the majority of races in Australia.

Keen to try out the new speed map tool?

Just head to the Form Guide section, navigate to any race in Australia or New Zealand, then click on the 'Speed Map' tab in the header that runs above each race field.

These added insights mean more punting intel and hopefully more winners for all!

Don’t like it one bit.

Yes. It's all very pretty, but I did like the numeric value 0-100 that was assigned to each runner. How it was calculated is a mystery to me, though I used to enter them into a sheet to factor into overall calculations. Like to see it back somehow!
